Abstract

One of the theological principles discussed among theologians is the issue of the infallibility of the Prophet of Islam, but the appearance of some verses of the Quran, such as verse 94 of Surah Yunus, in which God attributes doubt to the Prophet of Islam, seems inconsistent with this principle. The lack of a correct understanding of this verse has led to doubts about the Prophet's infallibility and the need for the testimony of the People of the Book to dispel the Prophet's doubt. The present article seeks to answer this question using a descriptive-analytical method: Who is the addressee of the verse? Considering the Prophet's infallibility and the fact that revelation is a form of direct knowledge, how can doubt be combined with his infallibility? Since the commentators, based on a negative perception of the concept of "doubt", have not been able to attribute it to the Prophet of Islam in the aforementioned verse, they have interpreted it in various ways, departing from the apparent meaning of the verse. While focusing on the word "doubt", one can achieve a reading of this verse that goes beyond various interpretative statements. The findings of the research show that the addressee of the verse is the Prophet himself and doubt in the verse is a primary, involuntary and legal doubt. This doubt is natural and does not have a negative charge that is incompatible with infallibility, but can occur to all individuals, even the Prophet.
